A SEO Review Of A Newspaper Classifieds Site
I was looking at a nationwide classified site and thought i would do a SEO review of what i found.
The first thing i checked was the meta tags for title, keyword and description, This was set up quite well and is as follows
<title>stumblehere - free classified ads | forums | Free Classifieds for local community. Buy, sell, trade | classified ad</title>
<meta name=”description” content=”Free Classifieds | forums| classified ads for local community. buy, sell, trade | post anything | local classified ads”>
<meta name=”keywords” content=”classified ads,ads,forums,images,buy,sell,trade,real estate,apartments,personals,dating,community classifieds,blog,blogging,classifieds,community,society,social networking,free classified ads, post an ad”>
The site has been optimized nicely for “classified ads” “free classifieds” and a few other targeted keywords.
The have also made good use of the robots and revisit tag. This tells Googlebot to index the site and follow all links and to revisit after 7 days
<meta name=”robots” content=”Index, Follow”>
<meta name=”revisit-after” content=”7 days”>
3 things they could do to improve on is:
- Title tag is too long, its 115 characters a robot friendly page is consider to have no more than 80 characters
- Keyword relevance to page content is about 20%
- Too many URL’s - There is 281 URL’s on the homepage. SE’s (Search engines) may have problems with pages with more than 100 URL’s on a page.
The first two are simple fixes, just editing the tags, the third may be more difficult as it a newspaper classifieds site that has a lot of content, backlinks to individual categories will help with that.
They have an online forum as well, which is always good for bringing in more visitors. From an onsite SEO point of view there is some work that could be done to the meta tags to improve SE placement, but overall it has good content and im sure visitors will return.
