Smart Business Advertising

Smart businesses advertise.

It doesn’t matter how large or small your business is, we all need to advertise.

Joe blogs down the road with his burger shack will advertise his business all the way up to the big boys such as McDonald’s, (boo hiss).

My point is if you have a business and you want to succeed you need to advertise, there are plenty of ways to do this to accommodate every one’s budget no matter how large or small, paid ways or even free.

Most offline businesses will advertise in the yellow pages, usually for a onetime fee, however more and more businesses are turning to the Internet to advertise their products and services.

There are many ways you can advertise online from (PPC) pay per click advertising, which involves a monthly budget and ongoing costs, to free advertising in classified sites and directories.

Personally I’m on a small budget like most people who first start out on the Internet; I would like discuss further more ways of free advertising or practically free advertising.

Free advertising will include methods such as submitting articles to article directories, most of them are free such as this free article directory. You sign up and then write and submit an article, the article will include a backlink or two to your own site.

This will in turn create search engine awareness of your site, meaning search engines will come and visit your site and index your pages, also if you submit to popular article directories and the get featured you will get people reading your article and coming directly from the article to your site.

Another good way is buy submitting your site to online directories, again these can be free directories or paid directories, generally you will submit your site to the most appropriate category, for example this site would be submitted to the SEO section of a directory or a blog section.

Normally free directories have very low page rank, which will means two things, first you won’t get much link juice from them and secondly the probably don’t have much traffic so you won’t get many visitors coming from their directory, but hey at the end of the day its free traffic.

If you have a small budget for directories then submitting to a strong PR business directory is a must, not only will you get link juice from them but actual traffic as well, Try and find anything over PR4 and it would be worth paying to submit to.

Think smart, if it’s a onetime fee, affordable, and will bring in traffic that will make you $$ then it has to be a wise investing.

Improving Your Adsense Earnings

OK, so you have a site and your finally getting visitors to your site, now how do you make money from your visitors? you could sell them a product of your own, you could promote an affiliate product, but most people start with AdSense ads.

AdSense is easy to set up and if your getting traffic to your site then that should convert nicely into a bit of extra pocket money for you.

If your site is in a common niche you may only get a couple of cents per click, but with enough traffic even the poorest of niches can still make you a few extra $’s a day.

So what if you are getting traffic but not getting any clicks throughs?

Well this was my case with my Dream Interpretation site. i was getting hundreds of visitors a day, about two thousand page views a day and making less than $1 a day :(

I decided to create a new template for the site more geared up for displaying AdSense ads, I now have a text ad unit near the top and 2 large vertical columns one for a banner and one for text ads.

So far this is working much better and i am now getting around 5x the revenue each day.

It seemed like a lot of work at first but its worth it long term, if you have a wordpress blog its a lot easier you can just upload a new theme, if you are running a 2.3.x wordpress blog and above i recommend having a look at this site as the have links to all compatible 2.3.x themes that are free.

Good luck and happy earning :)

Google 2008 First PR update

Have you noticed anything strange going on recently?

I have noticed over the last couple of days that the Google tool bar has stopped working, IMO i think Google are updating the data centers and the will be rolling out PR updates very soon.

How long will it take?

Well if I’m right and they are starting the update it shall happen over the next few days.

Watch this space, start checking your sites and feel free to post any success stories in the comments section.

Avoiding A Possible Duplicate Content Penalty

I previously wrote about 301 redirecting www to non www url and vice versa to avoid a possibility of getting a duplicate content penalty, but the is another scenario where you can have two identical homepages.

Google See’s your domain. say www.bettermychance.org and www.bettermychance.org/index.php as two different pages with the same content on both. so a great way to solve this problem is by putting some code in your .htaccess file

Here is what you do:

Options +FollowSymLinks
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index\.php\ HTTP/
RewriteRule ^index\.php$ http://www.bettermychance.org/ [R=301,L]

Replacing my domain above for yours.

Now when anyone goes to your domain.com/index.php they will be redirected to your main URL thus eliminating the chance of a duplicate content penalty.
